Magnetic trapping of hydrogen after multistage Zeeman deceleration.

چکیده
We report the first experimental realization of magnetic trapping of a sample of cold radicals following multistage Zeeman deceleration of a pulsed supersonic beam. H atoms seeded in a supersonic expansion of Kr have been decelerated from an initial velocity of 520 m/s to 100 m/s in a 12-stage Zeeman decelerator and loaded into a magnetic quadrupole trap by rapidly switching the fields of the trap solenoids.

Deceleration of supersonic beams using inhomogeneous electric and magnetic fields.
Methods for the production of cold atomic and molecular samples relying on the deceleration of pulsed supersonic beams are described and a review of the corresponding literature is presented. These methods include multistage Stark deceleration, multistage Zeeman deceleration, and Rydberg-Stark deceleration. Recent applications of the cold samples produced with these techniques are summarized.
متن کاملMultistage Zeeman deceleration of metastable neon.
A supersonic beam of metastable neon atoms has been decelerated by exploiting the interaction between the magnetic moment of the atoms and time-dependent inhomogeneous magnetic fields in a multistage Zeeman decelerator. Using 91 deceleration solenoids, the atoms were decelerated from an initial velocity of 580 m/s to final velocities as low as 105 m/s, corresponding to a removal of more than 95...
متن کاملGetting a grip on the transverse motion in a Zeeman decelerator.
Zeeman deceleration is an experimental technique in which inhomogeneous, time-dependent magnetic fields generated inside an array of solenoid coils are used to manipulate the velocity of a supersonic beam. A 12-stage Zeeman decelerator has been built and characterized using hydrogen atoms as a test system. The instrument has several original features including the possibility to replace each de...
متن کاملTrapping of Molecular Oxygen together with Lithium Atoms.
We demonstrate simultaneous deceleration and trapping of a cold atomic and molecular mixture. This is the first step towards studies of cold atom-molecule collisions at low temperatures as well as application of sympathetic cooling. Both atoms and molecules are cooled in a supersonic expansion and are loaded into a moving magnetic trap that brings them to rest via the Zeeman interaction from an...
متن کاملMagnetic trapping of strongly-magnetized Rydberg atoms
Effective magnetic moments of drift Rydberg atoms in strong magnetic fields are obtained for different energy and angular-momentum states. Classical two-body trajectory calculations and quantummechanical one-body calculations are employed. For heavy atoms such as rubidium, the trapping dynamics can largely be explained by the net magnetic moment due to the cyclotron and the magnetron motion of ...
